1.3.3. Communication

Communications specialists provide the following support:

  • Assisting in the preparation of a health sector information management and communication strategy consistent with the situation.
  • Promoting, facilitating, and/or producing information resources for the sector’s response activities and for health promotion.
  • Preparing and coordinating the dissemination of information on preventive measures as well as other key public health messages on the emergency.
  • Advising health ministry officials on managing communications and on effective relations with the communications media.
  • Connecting with any national and international communications media covering the situation, and facilitating relations with them.
  • Preparing and distributing press releases, handling requests for information from the communications media, and ensuring that key messages receive coverage and are disseminated.
  • Monitoring media coverage of the situation, and providing appropriate information when the messages reaching the public do not reflect the reality of the emergency or may create confusion.
  • Producing and disseminating photographs, maps, charts, videos, press reports, etc. that document the impact of the emergency and the effect of the response measures implemented by the health sector.
